- If you are married, know that Portugal recognises your marriage and the spouse uplift and family reunification apply on exactly the same terms as for any other couple. This is not a workaround. It is simply the law.
- Realistic expectations on timing. Six to nine months for the D7 end to end, five years to permanent residency, and ten years to citizenship for most non-EU nationals under the law that took effect in May 2026.
- A cross-border tax professional engaged to confirm the current regime. The NHR is closed to new applicants and its replacement does not cover pension income, so a retiree pays standard progressive rates.
