The last working chapter of every guide is a checklist. Three of its lines, quoted exactly, as verified August 2026:
- Travel medical insurance if you are travelling from outside the European Union, or your European health card if you are inside it. Sensible minimums are one hundred thousand dollars of emergency medical cover and two hundred and fifty thousand of medical evacuation, particularly past sixty.
- If you have a pre existing condition, buy the policy when you book the trip rather than later. The waiver that removes the pre existing condition exclusion is generally only available within a short window after your first deposit, and the window varies by insurer.
- Prescriptions in their original labelled packaging, carried in hand luggage, with a copy of the prescription and a signed letter from your doctor using generic drug names. Pack more doses than the trip needs; Portugal's regulator gives exactly this advice against delays and lost bags.
